One of the last 1970's films made by Artists who told their stories with rich imagery. This film maintains that high note from start to finish. It was directed by Carrol Ballard a former Director of Photography, filmed by first time DP Caleb Deshonel, and produced by Francis Coppola. Not much dialogue is needed. Boy meets horse, befriends it, trains horse with guidance from successful now retired horse trainer, spoiler alert... watch the movie. But this particular video transfer is beyond terrible. The "widescreen" format came nowhere near filling my tv's screen . Had to use its zoom-in feature to accomplish this. It blurred, of course, to the point of detracting from its enjoyment. I checked the packaging artwork to find the company that did this obviously pirated version but no luck. I plan to buy the Criterion Collection release. I've bought from them numerous times and always received what I ordered.
I loved this movie when I was a kid, and now my two kids (8 and 10) just watched it. They are jaded, having seen all kinds of superhero movies full of CGI and constant action, and I thought this might be too slow for them. But they loved it. We even discussed how the slow, beautiful cinematography was different from many of the movies of today; more like poetry. Their assessment: "The Black Stallion is a GREAT movie!"

I bought the Amazon Prime version of this movie and have zero complaints about quality. It’s HD and watches like an HD movie quality wise. There were a few parts where you can tell they remastered it - but for the age of this movie I thought it looked nice.
The criticism put forth about the plot and story believability in these reviews are flat out ridiculous and do not take into consideration that the story takes place in the 1940s before millennial helicopter parents, and child labor laws even existed! Nor do they take into consideration that the movie is, after all, based on a children’s fiction book, soooo there’s that.
Overall it’s a great movie that honestly doesn’t need anymore dialogue to tell the story. Suitable for smaller children with parental guidance.
At the heart of EVERY horse crazy kid is the Black Stallion - buy it watch whenever you need a trip back to your childhood.
Yes, The Black Stallion is my favorite movie. At first it was the "horsey" thing. I watched it as my kiss goodnight every night when I went to bed. Growing up I wanted an Arabian stallion just like Cass-Ole, I wanted to ride bareback down a deserted beach on a deserted island in the Mediterannean Sea, I wanted my horse to live in my backyard.
Now that I'm an adult, I appreciate it from another perspective. This film is soo neatly presented in all aspects. From acting, to editing, to the music....it's just a simple and refined way to make a movie, horse movie or otherwise.
And now we present the Blu-Ray release. Ugh. I was soo excited to learn The Black Stallion was coming to Blu-Ray I couldn't wait to add it to my film library. And then we watched it. And it was disappointing. Fraught with grain in every shot. No new clarity or brilliance whatsoever. I dare say it was no better than the quality of the DVD. The film SHOULD have been restored BEFORE the Blu-Ray release. You would think that a film selected in 2002 by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" and "for the first time on Blu-Ray" would get better treatment than this.
Movie gets 5 stars, this Blu-Ray release gets 2 stars for a rounded down average of 3 stars
The Black Stallion DVD was fantastic! What a great movie! It was so well made, much of the scenery was breathtaking, the actors did an excellent job (Kelly Reno, Mickey Rooney, Teri Garr, etc.), and the story seemed true to the The Black Stallion book I read as a child. I watched the DVD several times and will watch it again. Before buying the DVD I watched the movie on LightTV only because there seemed to be nothing else on regular TV and I was bed-bound with the flu. I really didn't want to watch this movie but I am so, so glad I did, and was totally surprised and unprepared for the movie to be as great as it is. Consequently I had to buy the DID so I could watch it again and again.
Doesn't Get any better than this. I remember seeing this movie in the theatres when I was a young boy, and the imagery always stayed with me. But seeing it again with my 8 year old almost forty years later was a revelation. Rooney shines as a retired trainer/jockey, the horse is exquisite and so is the hero, Alec, who is both passionate and somehow restrained in his emotional powerplay. What happened to that actor btw? The cinematography is jaw-dropping, I don't think many other movies come close to the Black Stallion for sheer photographic brilliance. Every shot counts, every shot has deep meaning and narrative drive. And every scene is like its own little story within a story, or another gem within this iconic, glorious tale.
I remember watching this when it came out for the first time and I knew right then, sitting in the theater, that this movie was going to be one of the best movies in film history. The actors have developed characters that are so rich and so thoughtful that there is no thought involved when watching...they just work so well together and within the story....they just let it happen. The imagery is stunning in it's starkness during the island scenes and then all of a sudden BAM! It punches you in the gut with it's richness. Easily a film that once watched will be remembered for decades.
5.0 out of 5 starsBeautiful Cult Film for Horse Lovers

This is one of the most beautiful horse movies ever made. Possibly one of the most beautiful films altogether. The horse is gorgeous and the cinematography is absolutely stunning. The story is that of the horse and the young boy Alec. The sole survivors of a shipwreck, they start bonding when they find themselves on a deserted island. There is a roughly half hour long sequence of them on the island in which not a single word of dialogue is spoken. What you get is amazing images of the horse, the boy, beaches, the sea and sunsets, accompanied by a rather lovely score reminiscent of tribal music. This lengthy island sequence is the absolute highlight of the film, making it the cult film it has become. Once the boy, along with his beloved horse, is rescued and reunited with his mother, the story becomes more conventional, possibly a bit predictable, but still highly enjoyable.
While the film may originally have been targeted at a young audience, children and teenagers, no matter how horse mad, may find it rather slow in places. More mature horse lovers should be able to appreciate it as the masterpiece it is. I absolutely love it and can't recommend it highly enough.
The DVD I bought has decent picture and sound quality. English subtitles are available. Language and subtitle options are as advertised. A theatrical trailer is also included.

Time has perhaps taken a tiny tick off the perfection of this for me (the ending is a bit abrupt, etc.), but this is still one of the best, most beautiful, most emotional, and most entertaining 'family' films ever made.
Eschewing dialogue entirely for large blocks of time, and then only using words sparingly when people do speak, this is story told in pictures, both breathtaking wide shots (often tracking shots moving so fast, but so smoothly that it seems impossible) and intimate close-ups revealing subtle details of emotion.
The sequence with boy and horse making friends while trapped on an island is justifiably what people remember most, but there's lots that's great here, including what was arguably the best performance of Mickey Rooney's long career.
NB: The DVD releases are frustrating. The US release isn't even anamorphic, and the UK version, while anamorphic, has lots of dirt, grain, and less than perfect moments. And they're still gorgeous.
But if ever a film screamed out for a blu-ray release, this is it.

Loved it. A magical tale of a boy and a racing stallion. The boy (Kelly Reno) is wonderful - natural and sincere, probably helped by the fact that he grew up on a ranch and never had an acting lesson prior to filming. Wonderful cameos from Terri Garr and Clarence Muse, with Mickey Rooney outstanding as the boys racing mentor. The cinematography is exceptional, magical scenes on a beach and the excitement of the racing captured perfectly. Marvellous direction by Carroll Ballard and with Coppola as executive producer- his father Carmine provides a sensitive and inspiring score.

I have to agree with all the other 5 star reviewers. A lovely film, beautifully photographed and it seems to age with much grace. I must say a thank you to DODAX from whom I ordered a used copy. It went astray, but was replaced in short order - by a new copy!
