Steve Martin turns in a heartwarming and hilarious performance as George Banks, a befuddled father who has a hard time letting go of his young daughter when she unexpectedly announces her plans to wed.

Our son called to say that our grandchildren were going to watch Father of the Bride for the first time, and would we like to watch along with them. I couldn't find our copy so I quickly bought this one. Across 700 miles during coronavirus lockdown, we all watched the movie together! After that the parents recorded each of our grands telling what their favorite part was. Those little videos are hilarious and priceless! The ten-year-old's favorite line was "Welcome to the 90's, Mr. [Bahnks]!"
This is a great movie. You know why? It’s more than just about an overprotective dad. It’s about opening your heart to change growth and everyone can relate to that. Grumpy and set in his ways (which have no doubt brought him success), narrow-minded, old fashioned dad meets a young, innovative, golden retriever type of man who has become fiancé to his darling daughter. One expensive catastrophe after the next (along with a lot of laughs), Martin’s character must hit rock-bottom before realizing that change and acceptance is the best way. Bonus: Martin Short as flamboyant party planner with a mystery accent and Steve Martin steaming up the screen with a sexy little dance in a too-tight suit. What more could one ask for? Also featured is a pointless, flat, little brother character who must have been cast simply because he’s Makullay Culkin’s little dwarfy brother.

Ironically this week Nancy Myers released via Netflix and somewhere else, Father of the Bride 3ish, a follow up to this charming film and its sequel. I watched that last night and found it too sweet and charming. A nice little capping to this story and frankly, makes me hope she does a full third theatrical release. Such is the story of the Banks family...
George is a great guy with a lovely family living that American dream... until his now adult daughter surprises he and wife, Nina, with news... From there you can guess - it does, after all star Steve Martin. The movie holds up after all these years and in some ways mixes a nostalgia for weddings before they went off the deep end of overspending entertainment, and a warm and loving family dealing with a new phase of life.
When you're done with this one, stop in on #2 - it is just as charming. A little more on the gooey side, but still a fun way to spend your movie time.
If you're looking for a nice date night film, a nice way to spend a weekend or rainy afternoon, or just want to torture your dad with his worst fears... have fun with this film.

This movie is full of hilarious situations that could and do happen in the preparation for your daughter to be wed. I was amazed at how true to life it was when after seeing the movie over thirty years ago and then experiencing the weddings of my two daughters. How real the movie was although unique and hilarious. I come back to it at least every three years and watch it again for reasons of nostalgia - additionally the acting is superb and Steve Martin is at his best. PapaEv
This is a movie I love for the memories, also Steve Martin. He kind of ran movies for me as a kid, he was in Cheaper By The Dozen (which I watched a dozen times), Father of the Bride, Father of the Bride 2, etc. etc. he's been in a lot. I might not have seen all of his movies but for whatever reason he's one of the first actors I remember.
This movie is heartwarming, funny, and underrated I think. It does have a lot of cheesy moments, so if you're not into that then this movie probably isn't for you, but I really like it.

The movie that gave birth to a generation of bridezillas has held up well over the years and is just as charming as it ever was. The strength of the movie is its cast. They really have wonderful chemistry and sell the concept of a perfectly imperfect family. The design is of course stunning, the writing is funny and warm, and for anyone who has "lived through" planning a wedding or is about to, sit down and order the chipper chicken because this is a nearly perfect family film.
My daughter is getting marry so I Bought this with the original Father of the Bride with Spencer Tracey. My husband and I sat down with our daughter and watched them back to back. I seen both before, my husband only seen the Steve martin one and both are first time for my daughter. We had a great time watching that especially listen to how my husband and my daughter laugh and comments on the movies.
This is a funny movie to watch, since Steve Martin is in it. The story may be quite realistic to some who are making wedding plans. My family enjoyed watching it, and the movie has many funny parts. Highly-recommend !!!

I remember when this originally came out in 1991 - I was 9 years old and I was absolutely desperate to see this in the cinema. Having figured I was way too young, I decided to wait until it came out on video (yes, that's how old I am), and believe me, it didn't disappoint! Fast forward 25 years later, and I still enjoy the same gags, laughs and general feel-good factor that this film brings! This reminds me of my childhood growing up, and yes I was just slightly obsessed with that beautiful house that features so prominently in the film! A must-see for everyone, and a true classic - I watch this over and over again, and I never get tired of it! One of my favourites!!
This is one of Steve Martin's best films I think, however his co-star Martin Short manages to steal the show as Fronnkk - the ever so chi, chi, chi wedding co-ordinator. Howard Weinstein, his assistant is also just super-fab. If you want a film that's guaranteed to make you laugh, then this is it.
