This is another true story about golf that will warm the heart and bring you to your feet cheering. Warm, funny and entertaining, this underdog-tops- the-pro and overcomes all odds story will leave you smiling for days. The little side-kick kid is not to be over-looked. He's spunky, chubby and funny as all get out. Stick around for "the rest of the story" comments as the credits start. Great fun and good for the whole family. AT LAST a family movie that isn't silly or goofy or an insult to the intelligence of those who just don't appreciate foul language, violence, sex or non-stop adrenaline. This is just plain and simple a good story.
I first watched this movie when it came to theaters in 2005, and was SO surprised by how much I liked it, despite the fact that I've never been much of a golf enthusiast! I've thought about it again and again, and decided that it was finally time to purchase my own copy. Here are some highlights:
*BRIEF SYNOPSIS: The movie tells the true story of Francis Ouimet, a lower-class caddy-turned-golfer who goes up against British golf legends Harry Vardon and Ted Ray in the 1913 U.S. Open. One of the movie's characters accurately sums up the feel of the movie by describing the contest as one of "one David versus two Goliaths." While the sport of golf takes the center stage, the movie is also about overcoming prejudices associated with one's social class since Ouimet, Vardon, and Ray all come from their countries' working classes. It's a top-notch "underdog victory" story that also teaches great lessons about being true to yourself and where you come from.
*MY FAVORITE PARTS: -Montages: I really love a good movie montage, especially those in sports movies! This movie is full of them, including several that speed up the pace of golf (which was a good call, since if we had to plod around with the characters for multiple 18-hole rounds, few viewers would have stuck around until the end!) -Music: The soundtrack for this movie gets stuck in your head really easily, and accompanies the montage scenes well. -Good for the whole family: As you might expect from Disney, this movie is suitable to watch with any audience, including children. I have enjoyed this movie for many years, from teenage-hood to adulthood!
All in all, I'm glad that I purchased this movie and I'm sure that I'll return to watch it again and again. Enjoy!

A Great Movie for the Whole Family, Whether You're Into Golf or Not! (Especially the Montages!)

What a movie. I watch it over and over. It has such depth of characters. The plot takes twists and turns, like the golf game itself, and it shows how courage in competition prevails. Despite the timeline being rather short, Francis Quimet, the main character is surprisingly grown up for his age. His caddie Eddie (age 10) was precious giving sage advice when Francis faltered in confidence. The acting was superb. It catalyzed my research on Henry Vardon, the first international golf superstar and it was fascinating to read about his career. This movie has value beyond "just" another movie.
This DVD can be watched by the entire family. It is a Disney production, directed by the late Bill Paxton. It is a true story written by Shia Le Beouf. It deals with the early years of golf (1911) and the men who portrayed the pioneers did a great job of letting you into their world. Paxton fimed many of the golf sequences as if you were the golf ball. Amazingly, you felt as if you were. It is a great movie exploring the winner versus the underdog and a young mans relationship with himself and his inspiration and insecurities. I really enjoyed this movie and would buy from this seller again.
In my opinion, this is the best golf movie ever made, a based-on-a-true-story masterpiece by the late Bill Paxton. And it's got an epic sweep that I know many non-golfers who also feel it's a great movie. Besides bringing golf legends Harry Vardon and Ted Ray to life, it's also a story about a changing world on the eve of World War II - from class status to opportunity. Instead of Tin Cup's talent and hardheadedness, we see an underdog caddy use every bit of resourcefulness to compete against the best.
As I'm English and live in the UK this is only currently available in the US. I found it hard to find. I was lucky enough to see this film working in an old job I had testing DVD's and BD's
I really enjoyed watching it at work and enjoyed it just as much seeing it at home. I love true story movies and this one didn't disappoint. It taught me a little about British history. Which was nice to see for some part but reminding me how stuck up a nation we are/were was not so fun, haha!. The same was portrayed about the Americans though so it was all square in the end.
I like Shia LeBeouf and first saw him in Holes through the same job. He handles the role in The Greatest Game Ever Played very well up against older seasoned actors and actors from a whole different country and culture too.
If you want a feel good film with a difference then take a swing at this. Keep an eye for his Caddy too. Wonderful little actor.

Let it roll and it'll seek the hole! Directed by the great Bill Paxton, this is a classic movie with great photography, script and acting. As a long time golfer and student of the game and the old time players that shaped the history and character of our game, this movie takes you back in time to where it all began. This is a great story and great family movie that will be enjoyed by non golfers alike. The kid that plays Eddie Lowery, his quotes, will have you cracking up! Great movie! The book by Mark Frost, is 5 star as well!
Please don't waste your money, folks. Once you get into the story (after five minutes of trailers for other Disney films), we get the typical sanitised version of the story of the 1913 US Open golf championship, won by the all-American blue-eyed boy, Francis Quimet, who came from nowhere to beat the arrogant Brits against all the odds. We're told this is a "true" story. Well, it's true that Quimet won his ONLY Open championship that year (something which the film discreetly omits to mention), but as for "true story" - well... Better read the golfing literature. I was expecting something like "The Legend of Bagger Vance", but this doesn't even come close. I didn't realise it was a Disney film when I bought this. When I did, my heart sank. If you're a golf fan, stick to Bagger Vance, which is a genuinely good film.

SAFE READING - NO SPOILERS
This is the story of the 1913 US Open Golf Championship; like many championships, not just golf, there is much more going on behind the scenes than the public ever sees. The best golfers of their time gathered at Brookline, Massachusetts. Ted Ray and Harry Vardon were considered the best there was and one was expected to win against a strong American challenge determined to stop the cup going to Britain. No-one seriously expected Francis Ouimet, an amateur from the "wrong side of the tracks" playing a gentleman's game to have any chance.
To know the rest, readers will have to purchase the DVD. Although readers do not have to be golfers to enjoy this, it helps.

I would recommend this to all people who enjoy true stories as I do. This is about the game of Golf which originated in Scotland. A boy who grows up watching and loving that game. It is a movie about his story and is very captivating. I can guarantee of you buy it you will love the story and remember this is a true story not a fiction. But it and enjoy. Same as many others true stories of real life sports men whether it be football or Hockey or any sport watching a champion is just great to see.
