This wonderful film is loosely based on a real life state basketball championship between what was thought of as the state powerhouse, Muncie Central Bearcats and a small town school from Milan. It captures the era and the spirit of the game perfectly. The real life game is still a topic of conversation some 50 + years later. Filmed in Indiana and the final scenes at the actual fieldhouse where the game was played - it rings true. It is a taste of life now somewhat diluted by the inception of " class ball. " If you were fortunate enough to have experienced " Hoosier Hysteria " in those days, you will remember the highs and lows this amazingly cast, written and filmed time capsule so accurately portrays. Signed, A Class of 71 Bearcat.
A solid 8.0 movie meets a solid 8.0 presentation in this Bluray edition. If you know the great Gene Hackman movie "Hoosiers" then there is no point in reviewing the title here. For my money its the best basketball movie ever and is solidly in the running as one of, if not THE greatest sports movie of all time. Yes, it's good. Video clarity is, imho, the BEST this movie has ever looked on home cinema. There is some evidence of digital noise reduction that wipes out some of the film grain, especially in darker scenes. BUT, the movie looks great over all and as stated previously, better than it ever has for home video. Sound reproduction is not quite as polished and sounds are clear, but lack the "Field of depth" that some movies offer with really immersive sound tracks. For those who have never seen the movie, watch it, and this is the best version I have yet seem of the movie.
I've known the Hoosier story my whole life. My late father was the student coach for the real team. It's great having the extra materials and interviews on this extended DVD.
Gene Hackman is hired as a basketball coach in a very small high school in Indiana in 1951. Everyone rejects him because he’s not from the town. He makes matters worse by implementing a new system which takes time for the players to figure out leading to struggles out on the court and more criticism. The politics of coaching is what dominates the start of the movie. You should know that he turns things around because this is Hollywood. I have to say for a classic sports film the basketball sequences aren’t that good. Only when the team is not doing well are they believable. When they start getting good they hardly show any action. It’s mostly a lot of close ups of players taking a jump shot. There’s also a lot of slow motion. Thankfully as the team progresses the games get better. Of course the movie is really about Hackman proving himself on and off the court more than the basketball.

I suppose you have to call it a sports movie and as such it's the best ever. It should just be called a great movie with the large ensemble cast doing an excellent job. Gene Hackman and Dennis Hopper are awesome and as always Barbara Hershey is perfect in the roll she plays as the millers daughter and English teacher and assistant principal. Sheb Wooley is in this and if you're a boomer like myself you remember him from all those old westerns we grew up on. Great story from beginning to end and it's on my top 100 movies you need to see before you pass onto the next life.

This is a wonderful classic. It's a good sports movie and it's off from the typical. You can really get emotional with this one and part of that is due to the scenery, the music, and decisions that translate over with that. It also kind of makes you miss a bit of a little bit of the simple life I suppose and seeing that things finally came to an end, but a great one.
This was yet another purchase for my son - he loves his DVD collections! He had watched Hoosiers on television or at a friends home and wanted a copy for himself. Gene Hackman is a very good actor and always brings something special to every part. In this movie, a small town sports movie, Hackman is the coach of an underdog high school basketball team. True to the small town image, the movie is not just about the team and it's accomplishments once Hackman gets involved in the coaching, but also about the drama involved in many of the players lives.
I can't say anything that hasn't already been said, except that there isn't much better than being a part of a great team. Great movie, great acting.....definitely worth the watch (I've seen it 3 times)

A lovely and unknown little gem about simple and true feelings, dreams, dramas and human touch and weakness. Gene Hackman in one of his best performances ever, tough, lovable, able to convey a range of colors even without saying a word. A rough and deeply dramatic role that only an actor like him can make it able to bring emotions and positive energy passing through drama and failure, still not feeling like a clichè tale of redemption and good feeling. The guys and the background characters from the village are all very convincing and Barbara Hersey and Dennis Hopper have never been so good (this was one of Hopper's first important role in years, and the start for a second life and career. An apparently common and simple structure yet the story unfolds naturally and without ever turning into pure mainstream and feeling untrue and not sincere.

Although states region A on the packaging this release is region A & B, this is one of those really great feel-good sports movies that you can watch over and over again even if you do not like basketball. Only seen released in UK on dvd under the title "Best Shot", I assume the distributor thought what would Hoosier mean to anyone outside the US, but the meaning is clarified in the special features documentary. Note this version is the 25th anniversary release & not the older release which was region A locked
