A terrific, if sadly under-known film from Danny Boyle

Quirky, fun and ultimately very moving ‘family’ film (though way more adult in feel than that usually implies) about two young brothers from a working class Irish family who find a bag of cash. One wants to spend it, invest it, use it, but the other feels compelled to follow the lead of the saints and give it to the poor.

A film with a lovely sense of humor, of family and of the way a kid sees the world. It has a few sticky-sweet moments, but they’re more than made up for by the very real moments of tension, humanity, loss, humor and emotion, Terrific performances all around, and given high energy by the always entertaining film-maker, Danny Boyle. A film with the spirit of Christmas, even if it’s not a Christmas film.

9 year old Damian (Alex Etel) and his 12 year old brother Anthony (Lewis Owen McGibbon) find a sack full of money from a train robbery. Anthony is an entrepreneur and wants to invest the cash in real estate to increase his portfolio along with buying luxury goods. Damian however is a special kid who loves saints. He sees visions of them all the time which influences him to want to give away his money to the poor and needy.

The appearance of the saints is funny. Damian says their name and the years they were alive before talking to them. It’s symbolic of Damian’s conscience. He’s also cute when he asks random people whether they’re poor because he wants to give them money. That’s the main message about sharing along with another about how large amounts of money can cause problems.

Overall a good family show for older kids - one brief scene of pre-teen boys exploring female anatomy via lingerie ads and a saint looking like she's smoking a joint (but more likely a cigarette considering the context). Yes, the Irish (not British) accents can be difficult for Americans to understand but worth the effort to sift through it.

The dichotomy between the ideas the 2 brothers have about how to manage the money is a great exploration of their different personalities in relation to everything from their birth-order to their relationship with their father and the loss of their mother.

And James Nesbitt (Bofur from The Hobbit and Dr. Jackman from Jekyll) is great it in.

I can't figure out whether this movie is for kids or adults, so I'll say it's for thoughtful/mature children and childlike adults. It's a beautiful story of a kid who finds a huge bag of British pounds. What happens to the money is laced with humor and quirky adventure. The child is young enough to have a pure heart and still know right from wrong. I would say the major theme of the film is money and its effect on people. Sub-themes include dealing with the death of a mother, Christmas, Saints, and moving.
The movie is fairly clean. There is some brief mild language and cleavage. Two young boys look closely at woman in a bra on the internet in a non-hormonal manner. There are some scarey parts too.
The portrayal of Mormons by the filmmakers is pretty silly. They did have a kid in a wheelchair as an extra--nice to see the diversity!
