This is a true comedy classic. You no longer see good written screenplays like this anymore. Unfortunately, the movie comedies of today are trash humor like that no talent, "Amy Shumer", and her ridiculous movies. The screenwriters of today can take a lesson from those back in the early 80's and maybe someday Hollywood will produce movies like they use too. This movie has a great cast and everyone in the family can watch it. I really miss this time in film history. Great to relive the moments when writing was a real art form. Thanks for posting Amazon. :)
This is a an awesome awesome film that takes me back. I was a 70s kid and did not see this until I was much older. Every actor in it is awesome. The 80s comedy history always seems to be remembered for other types of genres, but this one- this is a bit different. You can watch it even now and understand what taking care of a house and being a parent is like, no matter what year.
Classic 80's movie about role reversal. Still funny! Great movie to add to your 80's movie collection. When I purchased this file it was an "Add-on". Great price! Highly recommend!

Listened to The Rewatchables podcast about "Mr. Mom," so had to watch it again. It's light and fun, and both leads are just so young and cute to watch. The Amazon Choice 2011 DVD has no extras, and if you need subtitles, they come in Spanish and French only. But for a quick refresh of a pleasant story with plenty of great comedic lines, it's a hit.
I think it is worth the watch. A comedy you can watch with the family. Is it the greatest of all time? No. But that doesn't make it bad. It follows Jack (Keaton) who lost his job and must now run the household while his wife has a new job. The movie is probably somewhat predictable, but that doesn't mean there still can't be enjoyment from it.
Growing up in the 80s I loved this movie. However, its now a little dated. The idea of a dad as a fish out of water doesn't really work quite so well. However, there remain some classic moments which are almost exclusively when Keaton is on screen. Garr pulls her weight but her scenes are predicatable and not as well written. This is a fine movie or a lazy Saturday afternoon but that's about it.
Classic good old movie. It has held up over the decades... not sure "kids of today" would really understand much of it though ... they prolly think its sexist, derogatory, and offensive. Oh well, their loss for not enjoying a good classic like this!
4.0 out of 5 starsMegan and I are starting to watch the same TV shows. I'm liking them. I'm losing it!

Mr. Mom is directed by Stan Dragoti and written by John Hughes. It stars Michael Keaton, Teri Garr and Martin Mull. Music is by Lee Holdridge and cinematography by Victor J. Kemper. Plot sees Keaton as Jack Butler, who after being laid off from work, is forced to become as house husband when his wife Caroline (Garr) lands a good job with Schooner Tuna. Something he's really not cut out to do.
Ah, well, look, it's obviously very eighties, and thankfully society has moved on in leaps and bounds since this film was released. But good honest comedy is just that, honest, and for those looking for a good chuckle whilst admiring the talent of a pre-Batman Keaton, Mr. Mom is a bad mood lifter. Condensed into the 90 running time are enough gags and fun sequences to fill out a 12 episode sit-com, with a pre-teen-angst trail blazing John Hughes scripting it full of quotable lines. Lines which Keaton delivers with the comic timing not befitting someone just starting out in films.
The fun is mined from Jack being hopeless at basic household chores whilst badly tending the three young children at the same time. Enter scenes involving shopping, dropping the kids off at school, laundry, cooking and ironing. As his masculinity starts to wane, Jack starts too slob out and gets his kicks by watching day-time soap operas and playing cards with the neighbourhood women. This coincides with his wife Caroline (Garr adorable) advancing well at work, but paying a price for it by being away from the family home far too much. There's also the looming presence of Caroline's smarmy boss (Martin Mull delightfully sleazy) and the good time girl (Ann Jillian sexing it up) who has her eye on Jack for fun and frolics. Both of these are stereotypes, but they existed then as much as they exist now, with that, it's easy to cut Mr. Mom some slack.
Supporting slots fall to Christopher Lloyd (who would reteam with Keaton for the very funny The Dream Team in 1989), Jeffrey Tambor (City Slickers), Graham Jarvis (TV Starsky & Hutch/Cagney & Lacey) and Miriam Flynn (National Lampoon's Vacation). The child actors put in pleasing turns, where they score funny points both visually and orally, and director Dragoti (The Man With One Red Shoe) directs in an unfussy natural way. Ultimately it's Keaton and Hughes' script that lifts it to better comedy heights, the latter of which also plays on some basic fears that arise in the real world. Yeah, it's not just about Jack's bumbling around the home, that John Hughes was a sharp man you know? 7/10

After recently enjoying Keaton in his big screen debut Night Shift, i decided to order his next hit film Mr Mom which i must`ve watched maybe 15 years ago now. Not sure how it would hold up, i`m happy to say it's still a solid effort, both Keaton & Garr(nice to see the female lead get a substantial role) are very good, great script by John Hughes & its not too sentimental. Also features a nice supporting cast (even the child actors aren`t too cute!). If you like old 80`s comedys, i recommend giving Mr Mom a try. Oh, and theres a nice dream sequence too. 3 1/2 stars but it's no Night Shift.

A nostalgic purchase. I can remember wtaching this film on TV one Christmas back in the 80's and rolling around on the floor in hesterics.Wasn't sure if I'd still find it funny after all these years, but It's stood the test of time well and I laughed my socks off. Must be one of the funniest films of the 80's.
