This is Frankie Muniz's movie, playing a shy preteen in rural Mississippi in the 1940s. The other leading player is "Moose" in the title role, the same precocious Jack Russell Terrier who always got the goat of the Crane brothers on TV's FRASER. The adult cast is solid, including Kevin Bacon and Diane Lane as the boy's parents, but it's really a kids' movie. Nonetheless, it isn't saccharine or preachy. At the risk of repeating a cliche, MY DOG SKIP truly is the kind of movie the whole family can enjoy. High recommendation.
My kids love this movie. My daughter is 4 and thinks skip is adorable. It's about a 9yr old boy who gets a puppy for his birthday, you watch him go through trials and errors in his life while learning and growing with skip by his side.
I got my 1st kitten when I was 8yrs old in 1989 he lived for 20yrs. Watching this movie brought me back to my own childhood with my very best friend.
The ending is tasteful and very touching. I have seen this movie many times over years and still to this day I can't watch it without getting a knot in my throat. Just this last time I got up and went into the other room to hide my tears and my 4yr old daughter came to get me to see the ending. I didn't want her to see me sob like a baby. LOL
if you've grown up with a furry friend than you can relate to this movie. Kevin bacon is the boy's father, the acting all around is good quality too.
Who makes these horrible movies that are copies of every dumb fantasy movie made for the last 100 years? You know the whole plot line within 5 minutes, and then its an hour and a half of bad actors and non stop emo overtures drawing it all out in painful boredom.
Then the movie tries to pretend it has a message, which it doesnt. ........and the vomit inducing americanism just makes the whole flavor even worse......

Yes, “My Dog Skip” has too much voice-over narration, but some of it has a lyrical quality that can be savored. Yes, “My Dog Skip” is formulaic, but it’s a pretty good formula. Yes, there are some unbelievable moments in the film, but overall it’s entertaining and touching. Yes, it’s not that original, and sometimes it crosses the line between drama and melodrama, but it’s also a pleasant, sometimes illuminating, visit to 1940’s Mississippi. Yes, some children might be bored, and some might be too young or sensitive for this film, but it also has a rare combination of head and heart for a family film. Yes, it has some very mild profanity and vulgarity, and some mainly off-screen violence, but overall it’s a wholesome story about a boy and his dog. Yes, you should see it, but bring some Kleenex.
This is a very good movie! Set in the 50's. A family movie with a dog and how a little boy comes out of his shell and learns about life. It is literally for everyone. Wholesome which is why I like it.

In my youth, my favorite dog movie that made ME cry was
Old Yeller (Vault Disney Collection)
. There was a very long wait, then MY DOG SKIP came out in 2000. Ten years later, a-n-o-t-h-e-r movie based on a true story (and a Japanese movie)) about a dog that, daily, waited nine years for his master at a rural train station. I cannot decide which I like better: Hachi: A Dog's Tale [Blu-ray
] -- also stars Richard Gere. or My Dog Skip [Blu-ray
] ------------ also stars Kevin Bacon & Frankie Muniz.
All THREE of these movies made me cry like a little girl that just dropped her favorite doll in a mud puddle.
Excellent entertainment! In fact, if these three movies don't make you cry, you aren't HUMAN.
The prices of all three of these films are VERY good right now.
I have always prefered CATS, but, if you DON'T cry at the endings of these movies --- you just DON'T have a heart!
Based on a true story, this is a touching story about a boy, his dog, and growing up in the South. One of the better choices, in my opinion, to watch with your kids. A good story, set in the 1940's, portrayed by good actors capable of evoking emotion. Definitely worth your time.
I love a good old southern period piece, small town charm, where people got along to get along. Childhood challenges and dreams played out well in the good old days of simple pleasures and folks looked after one another. Many a nostalgic Boomer should enjoy this.
I have seen this movie a few times now and it still breaks my heart now as much as it did the first time. It is a beautiful story about a boy and his dog, growing up,getting old. It isn't just for animal lovers although I think they would enjoy it more having like myself recently lost my little dog,who was in fact only 4'he passed away whilst having an MRI can under anaesthesia.we were not given a reason as the vet did not know why his heart slowed down and stopped. They tried to start it again but it just was not to be.we are all totally devastated.it made it even worse if that we're possible as the it happened was my other dogs birthday, the two of them were best friends and he has not been the same since. In 2011 we lost our other little dog who was one week off his 17th birthday. In 2006 we lost our little dog he was 16 It s totally heartbreaking to lose an animal at any age. It is a beautiful film,, I also love a movie called hatching, that one you will need boxes of tissues.,!!!

This is the PERFECT movie for anyone who has been entrusted with the responsibility of taking care of a dog in their youth. It certainly brought my own experience back front and centre, and I am comforted by the fact that my own dog was, indeed, my best friend. Thank you so much Amazon.com.au for bringing this BEAUTIFUL movie to my attention.
