The "Pirates of the Caribbean" series has become so large and epic that it's easy to forget how relatively self-contained this first film was. Introducing Captain Jack Sparrow, Elizabeth Swan, Will Turner, and Hector Barbossa, the film focuses on cursed Aztec Gold and introduces many of the versions of piracy that dominated the latter movies. Mystical elements aside, the film is relatively character-driven, with the interactions between the main characters and side characters driving the action, the drama, and the humor. Even better, unlike the later bloated blockbusters, this film used CGI only when necessary and feels more grounded due to the limitations that placed on the story. Each successive "Pirates" film feels like an attempt to recapture the pure joy of this adventure story. Do yourself a favor and take a trip back to 2003 when Johnny Depp's portrayal of Jack Sparrow was odd, but confident, and Kiera Knightly and Orlando Bloom were up-and-coming stars. Enjoy Geoffrey Rush when he was a fun part of an ensemble cast and didn't have to carry an overdone, bloated blockbuster. The first remains the best and it's only with "Dead Men Tell No Tales" that the series has achieved a sense of resolution.
Not sure this is a bootleg or not. Bought the first three movies on Blu-ray for the higher definition audio not available with the DVD version. DTS HD Master is my preferred codec, and the packaging has it. However, the highest audio is an uncompressed 5.1 Dolby digital track. The picture is higher rez too but appears "cooler" than the earlier DVDs. I will keep them because they were all less than $10, but be aware these don't have the stated audio. Maybe I got a different region than US. Disappointed.
Super fun movie, but not for little kids. There are several very violent scenes where the pirates invade a town and people (both pirates and townsfolk) are killed by stabbing, shooting, etc. There is a brief scene of a very young child lost, scared, and crying for his mother, which would likely be disturbing to children. The pirates take the form of rotting skeletons in many scenes throughout the movie and look pretty gruesome. A wonderful movie, great acting, but make sure your kids are ready for the violence. I watched it in the theater when it came out and had forgotten how violent and scary some of the scenes are... I just let my 4th-grade daughter watch it -- she did okay and overall she enjoyed the movie, but some of the scenes were intense for her. Probably should have waited a couple more years to let her see it....
Purchased this film in blu-ray for the first time, and in terms of the quality of the actual film, it was fantastic. Having owned the DVD back in the day, seeing this film in full HD for the first time was a revelation. The packaging of the film was not in the regular blu-ray configuration that has become ubiquitous, but everything else about this purchase was well wroth it.
If you want summer fun, look no further than this movie. Although long, every minute is worth it, believe me. The characters are all memorable, the battles are exciting, and the humor offsets the intensity of the action and the scares of the skeletons. The cast are all fantastic with Johnny Depp stealing the show hands down. I've seen the others, but none of them can top this perfect summer seafaring movie!
Of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies the first - Curse of the Black Pearl - is the most entertaining and fun. There does't have to be anything in this movie to necessarily seriously critique, it's just a movie that if your going to watch it, it can just be let alone as entertaining. As far as Pirate movies go, PotC is just made for entertainment and if you like pirates and movies about pirates then it is a very good possibility you will like this movie. As in many movies a few lines or scenes probably aren't necessary but it doesn't detract from the film. Actors do what is needed, don't overact just make the movie enjoyable. Script makes for a good pirate story and the movie score definitely adds to the film. Rate this 3.0 - 4.0 stars out of 5 simply for the entertainment and probably for the music score that adds to the film.
The first film in the Pirates of the Caribbean series which introduces us to a great cast of colourful characters and the amazing visuals that have allowed these films to keep on coming and still be enjoyed by movie goers. This is not the strongest offering in the series in my opinion but does a great job of introducing you to the main protagonists and getting you to understand the times and way of life being dealt with in the film. Well worth checking out but for me there are better films in the series.

The movie itself is a 5 no question. Classic, entertaining and not touched by any of the following movies in the franchise in quality.
I had/ 2 (Dead Man’s Chest) and 3 (At World’s End) the latter with a sleeve. I was going to buy the amazon recommendation PotC but saw for a tiny bit more (at the time) I could get a good looking sleeve or different cover for it as well. This was not true. It didn’t have the sleeve.
As was correctly stated in the description there was only 1 disc, something which I was unconcerned with, tending not to watch bonus features. But as such:
Brilliant movie. Paid more, got 1/2 the number of discs and no cover.
1.0 out of 5 starsNOT the movie, not 3 discs either.

Not the movie, not 3 discs either! Read the reviews which all seemed to go on about the movie, saw the start of the description which said 'special edition release' so bought it only to play it and find out it's not the movie at all, just extras.
1.0 out of 5 starsAwful quality. Disc stopped many times though length of the film. Returned for no qibble refund.

The actual film was great, we had seen it previously and I was replacing videos for DVD. The quality of the disc I recieved was awful, but maybe I was just unlucky.

Would have rated higher due to low price of item, received one still in wrapper but disc sounded like it was in bits, didn't even open it to check, sent it back right away.
