The heroic tale of the courageous exploits of the Robinson family after they are shipwrecked on a deserted island. Using teamwork and ingenuity, they overcome the obstacles of nature and transform their new home into a "civilized" community.

As others have noted, this movie is only loosely based on the novel of the same name by Jean Rudolph Wyss. The novel is more of a survival against the odds story. It is great reading in its own right. This movie is more of a family fun film. The characters are a bit over drawn compared the the characters of the same name in the novel. The pirates figure prominently in the movie; you'd be hard pressed to find them in the novel. The family's strong religious faith, led by the father, is very prominent in the novel and not in the movie. I could go on. Still, if you take it for what it is - an adventure story for the whole family - it is an enjoyable 2 hours. The quality of the video and audio on this DVD were fine; the video looks great on our 62" TV and the audio sounded great through our home theater system. Almost as good as being in the theater, without having to worry about old chewing gum on the floor. Since we often go to Disney World and climb the Swiss Family Robinson tree house there, it will be great to do it again with a renewed appreciation of the story as Disney chose to tell it.
Great family movie from my childhood! Exceptional acting & fantastic cinematography for its time. Lovely tropic scenery. Fun story. I like to keep an assortment of family DVDs on hand for when friends with younger children stop by. The loud, flashy modern children’s’ movies are just too obnoxious to have on the tv when adults are also around. The sound alone drives me nuts! Not so with this classic. It’s a film adults & kids alike can enjoy & the adults can still talk & visit while the kids are occupied by an old film they likely have never seen before. It also has a second disk which has a lot of special features & extras on it which you would never see on TV is you could ever find this on cable. This dvd is a great bargain & value from Amazon. I still enjoy this movie from my childhood. You probably will too! I hope this is helpful.

Walt Disney may not have followed the book, but the story he told has lasted the years. Imagine this an action adventure movie with no computer generated graffics, no blood, no sex, but has story, plot, chactors, enjoyable interplay. See it. Show it to your children, there is a different kind of movie you want to watch.
We received 2 DVD's in this set, brand new. I remembered watching this movie when I was young, and decided to buy it for our family since it's rated G. Thank you God for Walt Disney who made so many wonderful family movies rated G.
I congratulate all of the fine and wonderfully talented, brave, and daring actors in this movie who did most of the stunts themselves, including ACTUALLY riding a REAL ostrich, zebra, baby elephant, and donkey; pretend to wrestle with an enormous snake in a REAL swamp, which ACTUALLY wrapped itself around them; had to be brave enough to go to, and temporarily live, on an island experiencing an epidemic; experience a typhoon; and pretend not to be terrified of a REAL tiger !
Disk 2 was so fun and I highly recommend it for even the youngest kids because they show the entire Tree House that was built in a REAL tree--FANTASTIC--and everything WORKED !! The Tree House is the REAL DEAL ! Disk 2 featured a fun and enjoyable ethnic island musical documentary about the work done by the islanders, actors, and staff on-site; entertaining actor interviews; video clips; Walt Disney enjoying himself in the Tree House like a kid again; and video clips of John Mills family including daughter Hayley (whom we know well from "The Parent Trap" and her other Disney movies), etc.
Many animals were brought to a REAL island and there were many duplicate animals for acting purposes so as not to be overworked. After watching both DVD's, it appeared to me that the actors were the ones who got a few scrapes and bruises and near-misses, but fortunately, no person or animal was seriously hurt.
Considering all the garbage movies on the market today, I count myself fortunate to have grown up in an (older) era of wonderfully appropriate movies for children that I still remember with fondness today as an adult. My family enjoyed this movie. It would be fun just to experiment and try to build a tree-house like that--with fully functioning utilities--SO COOL !! You can't hardly ignore the sparks of creativity that entice you to want to build one yourself.

Well, for starters the blue ray restoration could certainly have been given a better treatment, but I guess Disney is all about Pixar now, and can't be bothered with the greatest live action adventure to ever come out of the studio. Still, it's nice to see it looking better than before. Some scenes really pop, others not so much. As you must already know, bare bones disk, just the movie, and that's it. Hard to justify the cost unless you are a big fan of the film, as I am. I just resent the second class treatment, this great film deserves better.

Fantastic family film, (although the explanation for the wide variety of the animals, originating from different continents, in one place, is not there!). I loved it when I was a kid. Great story with lots of mishaps and it shows kids how much fun it is being outdoors ( even though they have much better weather, it's a good message) When you've seen it, it can be used as the start of imaginary play or story writing/telling. They can talk about their fears ( there's a shipwreck at the beginning - shows how important it is to learn to swim) and learn useful skills ( see grandparents or library books for proper knots that you can actually undo). I was surprised how much thinking this generated. The downside? Be prepared for your children to ask you to build a tree house complex as your new permanent home.( and fob them off with camping - it's just as character building)

The DVD is currently excellent value for money. A good transfer (filmed in Panavision we get bars top and bottom), good clear picture, sound and optional Subtitles. Loads of extras including commentary and docs. For me, as a perhaps more senior viewer I found some parts a bit trying - yes Kevin Corcoran - I mean you, - and the rivalry between the two brothers over Janet Munro got a bit tiresome, but otherwise, plenty of action, humour, and some threat ( from Sessue Hayakawa and Milton Reid), and also, tho I don't like to spoil anyone's enjoyment, I wasn't very happy about how the treatment of animals comes across (the tiger and the dogs, and riding all sorts in the race), but maybe I am being too sensitive. I think it's fun for all the family, but it would have benefitted by being 15 mins shorter! Recomended
I remember watching this with my grandparents when I was little. My son has recently read the classic book & so I thought I’d introduce him to this classic film version. At a bargain price of £2.99 you really can’t complain. The picture & sound are clear - much better than the scratchy VHS copy I used to watch - obviously having been remastered for this release.

I saw this movie when it first came out, and my kids really enjoyed it, along with the rest of u,s when we recieved the DVD. From the era when the name Disney could be trusted for family values.
Ok, well I remember watching Swiss Family Robinson as a child in the 90's and don't remember all the film as I was young, I just remember the awesome tree-house so I bought this DVD to try and re-live those memories.
But I'm sorry to say I must of been looking back with rose tinted glasses on as the film does have a small amount of animal abuse. I agree with the other comments about this matter. I have given it 4 stars as the film is from such a long long time ago and if it was made now then the animal's would be treated better.
