An Honest Review of Sézane

I recently posted on Sézane, a French brand that is now offered in the US, when I fell in love with everything in their catalog (post here). I loved it so much, I ordered a ton of things!

This is an honest review of what I thought about the items I ordered and Sézane in general. Firstly, all the items shipped free through a promo (now all orders over $200 ship free) and arrived in three days. Also, returns are free, which was easy enough. I just went to their website, signed into my account, and printed the return label.

Criteria:

I’m a stickler for quality, seams, and fit. It’s my fashion merchandising and stylist training. For reference, I’m consistently an XS in most brands and a 0-2 in J. Crew. I found that I am a size 4 in Sézane.

Reviews:

Sézane Top

Ninon Blouse

I ordered this top in a 2. You can see my shoulders extend a bit over the shoulder seam, and the sleeves are a little short. It also felt a bit tight. I returned it for the same shirt in black in a size 4. I absolutely love it! It IS see-through, but I kinda like it (my version of living on the edge -ha!). I wore a black bra under it for date night and loved the look. If I wore it to work, I’d probably wear a black or skin colored cami under it. The fabric is a cotton blend, the seams are strong, and overall, it’s good quality.

Sézane TopSézane Top

Oscar Striped Jersey Shirt

This top is an XS, and again, it’s too small. As you can see, my shoulders extend beyond the seams, and it’s pulling on the back bow. I returned it for the red color (since I’m kinda crazy over red this season). I love that it’s a thicker cotton so it’s not clingy. Also, I love that the stripes match up with the side seams, which is another sign it’s good quality.

Sézane Top

Kristina Blouse

They didn’t have the size 2 in this top, so I got a 4 and it clearly fits better than all the other tops. That’s when I knew I was a size 4 in Sézane. I have to be completely honest, I’m not a fan of paying a lot for polyester, so I returned this shirt out of principle. It’s my issue. There are some really great polyester blends these days, and I should probably get over it.  If you don’t care about this type of thing, this top is really quite pretty.

Sézane TopSézane Top

Boy Shirt

This blouse is 100% silk, and it’s less than the polyester top! Now that’s what I’m talking about! I’m wearing a size 2 in this blouse, and I like the fit. It may be because it’s their “boy shirt.” The shoulder seams hit at the right spot. Also, I appreciate the button placement between the boobs. It helps avoid the unwanted gapping that occurs with a lot of button-ups. The length is nice, too. Plus, a silk blouse is one of “The 10 Essentials For Fall.”

Sézane Top

Telma Blouse

If you follow along on Instagram, you’ve already seen this top! It’s a size 2 and I could probably stand to wear a 4, but I wanted to wear immediately! It was too cute to wait! Plus, it’s 100% cotton, so I knew it would give a little. It’s been the perfect top for the transition from summer to fall. It is see-through, but it’s not as see-through as it looks in the picture. I could definitely wear a camisole underneath, but I haven’t felt the need to so far. Ha!

Summary:

All in all, I think Sézane is a really solid, good quality brand. I think their sizing is a little smaller than what we are used to, which may be because they’re a European brand. I’ve been impressed with how easy it is to shop the website and order, how quickly the shipment arrives, and how easy it is to return items. For me, I’m digging the brand because it has really great basics but also has unique pieces.

Happy shopping!

Those tops are all so pretty and feminine!!! I love your blog, by the way! I think I’ve commented just once before that I ordered the blue Saucony (I think that’s the brand, it was through Madewell) tennis shoes you posted a while back and they are still one of my favorites! You’ve really opened my eyes to different styles and thanks to your red lipstick post (last week I think?) I went down a rabbit hole of lipsticks and ordered Mac’s Ruby Woo and am OBSESSED! I wore it all night with a clean face and PJs after it came in and I still loved it. I appreciate your blog a lot, it’s different than a lot of blogs out there and so refreshing to me! 🙂

    Hello, I love your blog!

Did you need to wear a cami underneath the silk boy shirt? Did it lean more sheer or opaque? It looks like it would be fine without, but sometimes you can’t tell from photos. I’m on the hunt for the perfect white silk shirt that doesn’t need anything underneath.

    Thank you!

Hi, I am not wearing a cami underneath, and I do not feel like I need to. I don’t think it’s too sheer, but I wouldn’t call it opaque. I hope this helps.

Thanks for your review. Super helpful. I’m curious if you can comment on where the garments are made, as there’s no info on their website. Also, I’m not sure if their website changed but I don’t see any details as to what material each item is made of. Is that why you returned the polyester shirt, because you didn’t know the fabric composition ahead of time? I live in Canada so unfortunately knowing all the details before ordering is a must! Thanks again for this review – white’s a great colour on you btw.

I’ve ordered a few things off Sezane and in Europe I am generally a XS or size 6 but Sezane’s products fluctuate a lot. One pair of jeans were way too big for me and another too small in the same size. I also have the first two tops that you reviewed and they have both shrunk. I spend a fair amount on clothes and are really careful with garmet care so this pissed me off a little. Then recently my bf ordered a pair of jeans for my birthday. First they were lost in the post and then when they arrived they were the complete wrong size despite being the same as things I’ve ordered before. They don’t offer exchanges only refunds so I never ordered a second pair as the first were bought during a sale and they refused to honour the discount which I thought was pretty cheeky all things considered. Just thought I would add my five cents worth as I too fell in love with their online store but have been a tad disappointed by the reality of the products.

Hi. I recently discovered this brand but am reluctant to order since it’s from out of the country. Was there any unexpected duties or customs you had to pay with the carrier after your order arrived? I brought 300 from a website in Australia and got a fedex bill a few months later charging 75 dollars. Ever since then I’ve been hesitant to order anything from a site outside of the U.S.

Thank you for this oh-so-helpful review. Most of the brands I shop have websites with reviews from customers which helps inform my decision to purchase or not much of the time. Sezane doesn’t seem to post any customer reviews, which made me a tad nervous to order. That and the mixed reviews of the company that I read on other sites (many commenting on the “condescending” and generally awful customer service and complicated returns process). But then I found your review and it gave me the confidence to give it a go. Your review also helped me determine my size. I’m usually a 4 in most brands but decided to go with a 6 for my Sezane order. Some of the tops were a bit on the generous side (especially around the abdomen/waist area) but overall, I’m 99% happy. I don’t mind tops being a bit bigger, especially if it means that the trade-off is that they don’t pull unattractively across my chest (I am unfortunately substantially bustier than Sezane’s models).

Anywho, thank you kindly for taking the time to review this brand / company! Very, very much appreciated!

Ordered a silk blouse from Sezane a couple of months ago and have been very pleased with it. I always check out new company before I place an order. I never just take it on face value that a company is trustworthy or the quality is up to a good standard. I guess there will always be someone that has not been happy with their purchase for whatever reason though. Placed another order and currently awaiting delivery.

I really loved Sezanne and wanted to keep shopping there, but a recent experience has me a bit miffed. I purchased a really darling blouse from Sezanne two months ago and have worn and washed it all of two times. I discovered a defect where the collar is stiched to the shirt. The fabric must have been improperly cut and is just shredding and will not stop. To fix it would compromise the shape of the shirt.

I’ve shopped there for myself and gifts many, many times and asked if they would consider an exchange this one time. Instead, they grilled me on what I wash the shirt with, how I wash, what temperature water, what soap, how I dry it, asked for photographs, and then after this what felt like a BAR exam, told my to get it fixed at a tailor and that they could pay the expense (after a tailor has said it cannot be fixed).

I will not be shopping there again. There are better brands that stand by the quality of their product enough to admit something is worth damaging out.

You see the brown spots on the hydrangeas in this You see the brown spots on the hydrangeas in this picture? It's kinda embarrassing to admit that they’re all I could see at first when I was cutting these hydrangeas from my yard- all the ugly brown, dry spots. As I brought them inside to throw away, I saw them all in my arms and thought, “Wait, these are really pretty all together. How could I just dismiss these so quickly?” Well, it's no surprise to me why I could dismiss them so quickly being the enneagram 1/perfectionist I am, but this was such a good reminder that if I choose to see beyond all the little imperfections in my life how much richer and more beautiful my life becomes! I hope someday I won't even notice those brown spots, but I also have grown to appreciate that God gave me an eye to try and make my world and life a better place. I just gotta keep it in check and not dismiss the whole lot of hydrangeas for the little brown spots. This is a really beautiful, loving life if I'm looking for it.
I woke up to an email from @anthropologie announci I woke up to an email from @anthropologie announcing their tag sale that starts today (an extra 30% off sale items) and noticed that this jumpsuit I purchased and have not had the chance to post was part of the sale. When I don’t feel like putting together an outfit, I gravitate towards one piece outfits- like a jumpsuit/romper or a dress, which seems to happen more and more during this time at home. Putting together two pieces to make an outfit feels like so much work these days! Plus, I look fully dressed without much effort, and you know I like that. Anyway, there are so many cute one piece options on sale! Then, I noticed that so many items I found and loved during this same shopping trip are included in the sale! For the last couple of years, finding a versatile For the last couple of years, finding a versatile cover-up has felt practically impossible. Especially since ruffles, puff sleeves, and bows are where it's at with swimsuits right now. It felt like I was trying to buy a cover-up for every swimsuit (ummm, no), which forced me to put on my thinking cap. I finally found my perfect solution!!! SCARVES (aka sarong's)! I'm calling them scarves because I love the idea of using the scarves I already have in my closet as cover ups! Or wearing the sarong you have as a scarf! Not to mention, there are so many more darling scarves out there than there are sarongs and cover ups, and in my mind, they are just waiting to be used as coverups! Plus, typically scarves are less expensive! When I saw this darling rainbow scarf, I knew that I wanted to wear it immediately with this swimsuit top.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’ve linked a few scarves I'm loving that I think would be great as a cover-ups. I didn't have a chance to check the measurements on all these scarves, so make sure that they're big enough! http://liketk.it/2QzmV #liketkit @liketoknow.it #LTKswim #LTKstyletip #stylist #houstonstylist #styletip #swim #coverup #swimcoverup #summerstyle
I have a new trick! I don't know about you, but I' I have a new trick! I don't know about you, but I'm in love with a lot of these statement swimsuit tops that are out right now. But, I am not in love with the price tag! So, I've come up with a solution! I buy the statement top, and then I buy my swimsuit bottoms from Old Navy! Their swimsuit bottoms fit well, and it's fun to be able to mix and match! In this picture, I'm wearing a designer swimsuit top with my Old Navy bottoms. And since Old Navy has so many different cuts and styles of bottoms, you can find the right fit for you and mix and match the bottoms with your favorite tops! For instance, if you have a red swimsuit top, how cute would they be with blue and white polka dot bottoms for the 4th? Or you could pair your red top with the red and white stripe bottoms. I don't think it matters much if there is a little color variation. Once the swimsuit is wet the colors change, anyway! I'm so excited about this trick, I can hardly stand it! Can you tell?! If you utilize this trick, please tag me or send me a picture. It would make my day!!!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For sizing reference, my personal favorite are Old Navy's bikini bottoms. I wear either a small or medium depending on how I feel that day. But like I said, they have all different cuts for bottoms, so you can find the one that's right for your body type. http://liketk.it/2Qzjx #liketkit @liketoknow.it #LTKstyletip #LTKswim #styletip #stylist #houstonstylist #summerfashion #fashiontips #stylehacks
You gotta love it when a plan works out! I bought You gotta love it when a plan works out! I bought this top after I posted about my favorite tops for summer on the blog. I know that off the rack clothing rarely fits perfectly. I usually end up returning online orders and go on the search for that perfect top, but unfortunately, that usually comes with a high designer price tag, not to mention hours of searching. Now in COVID times, returns are more difficult, and I don't have the liberty to just go in stores to search for that perfect top. It's definitely giving me a "make it work” attitude, which is really working out well for me! For instance, this top was shown on the model with an open back that tied with a bow and a bra looking front (swipe right). I used a tack stitch on the bottom of the bra part to provide more coverage and wrapped the bow to the front so my back is covered and my front has more coverage. I paired it with my sister's (@tellittoyourneighbor) and my new favorite high-waisted denim shorts. They're a great denim short option for all shapes, and if you want more length, you can keep them unrolled. And I love how my new favorite @espacio_popupshop MAC bracelets tie it all together! Now, let's talk about how I really want to get a hot glue gun out and make a dope mirror like this one! I don't have seashells. I wonder what else I could use? I love the changes I see happening in our country, I love the changes I see happening in our country, and I don't want them to end. I don't ever want to go back to the way things were. All of this progress feels so right. I feel it so deeply in my soul. I'm all in on all of this kind of LOVE. I want to be a part of the change, and I plan to do so in my own little way, but I am taking a cue from @beabridgebuilder founder @latashamorrison and pressing the pause button. I will stand in a place of awareness and humility and learn. But one thing I've realized that I've done in the past that hasn't been helpful is staying quiet for fear that, out of my ignorance, my words would offend a Black friend and that I would be corrected. (In fact, I would always say "African American" for fear that "Black" was offensive. I learned that's not the case.) My silence didn't help anyone. So, I go forward knowing that out of my ignorance, I will make mistakes and will unintentionally offend, but I won't let my fear and self preservation get in the way of trying to help. If I make a mistake, I can learn and say I'm sorry. I'm a big girl now, and I want change. If the change leads to me being humbled, I'm ok with that. I won't stay silent anymore.
