Vests, to me, are a perfect layering piece for the fall/winter. I especially love this sweater vest, because sometimes my puffer vest seems too casual for certain occasions, and my fur vest just does’t seem to “go”. So when Nordstrom asked me to check out their Eileen Fisher sweaters and I came across this sweater vest, I knew it was something I wanted to share with you guys. Plus, Eileen Fisher is known for their quality, so I knew it would stand the test of time and be a well-worn, versatile piece in my wardrobe.

I specifically love vests for layering because you can typically wear them on top of what ever you have on, even if you’re already wearing a sweater or a light weight jacket.
I often get asked questions about how to layer, and in my mind, layering looks best when it’s thrown together (although it may not be -ha!). For instance, I’m thinking about the many times I’ve seen super chic Europeans wear layered looks so effortlessly. They’re not matching, but it all just goes. How do they do that?!?! Well, what I’ve noticed is that they don’t seem to be to worried about matching, and perhaps they are layering with certain pieces out of necessity (ie. a certain cashmere scarf, wrap). I’ve found myself using these ideas recently with my new beloved sweater vest. I needed to wear it out of necessity, and well, because it’s so cute! But, what I found is that I was forced to think outside of the box. In the end, with layering, I don’t worry so much about whether it matches. I just force it, because I need it to stay warm and usually something really fun and unexpected comes out of it.
So, what are the “effortlessly layered out of necessity looks” I came up with? I’m so glad you asked! You’ll be seeing these outfits again in my everyday outfits post soon, but I was too excited to have you all wait. I wanted to share with you now!
And this one, just for fun.

Love the new change to the website, Carly! I also love those booties, but I wish they came in smaller sizes. Do you have any suggestions for alternatives for those with smaller feet, say 5.5?! 😉

Amber, I have the perfect bootie for you! I just put a client in these, and she was your same stature. I like the putty color best. Link here: http://bit.ly/1uOfZBS

Hi. I check your blog often and love your easy lifestyle view of fashion. Just curious, what would you suggest wearing to Disneyland? I’m a mom of five kids and want to be practical yet stylish.
