Since I’ve been busy posting lots of black (my last three posts have had a lot of black), I wanted to talk about something. I think I’m writing this more for myself, but I’m also writing this for those of you who have had a similar experience. You see, I’ve always worn a lot of black, and a (well meaning) relative once made a comment about how they would like to see me in more color… because nice girls wear color. Unfortunately, ever since the comment was made, I think about it every time I put on black. Has there ever been a comment made to you about your appearance or your looks? Like, you shouldn’t wear this color, you shouldn’t wear this shape shirt, you shouldn’t wear that style of pant, your a (blank) shape and therefore can only wear this and this….
Have you ever stopped and asked yourself what you believe about the comment? Do you really think pink looks bad on you, or that you don’t have the “right” shape for skinny jeans? Well, my belief about black is that it’s a striking color, it’s extremely versatile, and it can take any outfit up a notch. And sometimes when I wear all black, I feel empowered. And you know what else I know? I’m a nice and kind person, gosh darn it! Even if I wear black everyday! SO, if you are in my boat and have a particular comment stuck in your head, let’s decide to remind ourselves what we really believe. If you’re unsure, ask a friend that really loves you. I’m going to remind myself that I like the color black, and I’m a “nice girl”. I am who I am, no matter what appears on the outside. I’m learning more about myself by asking myself what I believe. Let’s not let those comments define us anymore. Instead, let’s think about them and then move past them. So, all of this is to say, I will be wearing black a lot more freely! I hope you will join me?!?!

I love black….wear it all the time. Nothing any more classic and sharp. Hides a multitude of things. If I want color I achieve it with accessories.

Puh-lease! Black lulu pants and puffy vest are my uniform! And it’s practical as a busy mom in case you get chocolate, dirt, kid food, etc on you. Let that comment roll off our shoulders, sister! #nicegirlswearblack #blackisthenewblack

You look great in black. The naysayers are almost always jealous. I love your blog and your take on fashion. I am 54, very petite, and read your posts faithfully. I like fashion as much as the 20 and 30 somethings, and you are an inspiration to me. The color of your clothing does not determine who you are, your heart does. Keep up the good work.

Excellent perspective! The funny thing is, I’m currently hating black on myself. I’m in the last trimester of pregnancy and most of my maternity clothes seem to be black and for me, black (and khaki) were the lazy I-don’t-know-what-goes-together clothes from when I was younger. Now, I love to mix colors and that is really my look – but I’m way too pragmatic to replace my maternity wardrobe, so I’m trying really hard to play with accessories and the few maternity colors that I DO have, but wow, I can’t wait to get back to my colors!!

You look great in anything but you can tell even more than that, that you are a very nice person. Love your style and your blog! Every time I look up your blog, my two little girls start singing and dancing. They made up a “c-style” little song and dance where they sing “c-style, c-style, c-style”!!! It is funny!!!

One of my best friends made a comment to me circa 2007 about how most of my closet was black clothes. Surely she meant well, just as your aunt did. It did strike a chord in me and I think subconsciously I started to get away from it. Now 8 years later, I find myself most comfortable in black, white and gray. While I do love color, I can’t help but feel the best when I’m wearing those 3 colors! So I’ve decided I will not my fight my true nature any more. And if I’m drawn to black& white and my closet ends up being 80% that, then so be it! 🙂
Loved this post.
