A skirt and a dressy/festive top is a great option if you don’t want to invest in a cocktail dress OR if your event is “holiday chic” or has a really vague descriptor for attire -ha! I particularly like this look if your event is right after work, just wear a blazer over it during the day.
I also like that this combination is budget friendly. If you have black pumps and a skirt, you can just pair it with a festive top. If you buy a new top, you can wear it again with pants or black skinny jeans for other events during the year, maybe even New Years!
I liked that this top had a little bit of sparkle, it made it feel more holiday! If you have a sequin top or a silk blouse, try tucking it into your skirt. I’m always an advocate for giving yourself a nice waistline, plus your outfit will look more tailored. And, if you don’t have a top with sparkle, you can always add your own sparkle with some jewelry.
I’m still really loving both of these wardrobe “staples” from J. Crew. The pencil skirt is the perfect length and the pumps are such a classic style.

Here are a few of my favorite festive tops. I would tuck all of the tops into my skirt that aren’t a peplum style. I’m pretty serious about that waistline -ha!
